George Luna: Being part of something big

Golden Gate Fields is Home for Retired Jockey George Luna. It wasn’t his goal to be a jockey, in fact George Luna wanted to be a landscape architect, but people kept telling him “Hey, you’re small enough to be a jockey,” and eventually he became one.

His days are full. He’s at Golden Gate Fields at four every morning, seven days a week, training and exercising horses. He says, “Riding’s dangerous, a bit like going to war. I’ve broken more bones than I care to think about, but it makes life more precious; you pay more attention.”

Parent/Child Swim Lessons

The primary objective of Parent/Child Lessons is to get both parents and children comfortable in the water.  Classes help prepare children for the preschool level classes by being exposed to games that use basic movements, such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control.  Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child.

Preschool Swim Lessons

Preschool Swim Lessons offer children their first experience in the pool without parental assistance.  Children are taught the basic stroke development, personal rescue skills and are introduced to water sports and games.

Youth Swim Lessons

Youth Swim Lessons are for children ages 6 years and older.  Children use repetition and practice to create a student centered environment with well-trained instructors.  This program comprises five main components:  personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports & games and rescue.  Each skill level builds upon the preceding levels, covering all strokes, diving and safety fundamentals.

Adult Swim Lessons

Adult Swim Lessons are designed to meet the individual needs of each participant. Beginners will learn to enjoy the water, work on fundamental strokes and lap swimming skills. Advanced swimmers will focus on increasing endurance and improving stroke technique.
